The USA welcomed me with a magnificent display of fireworks!
Only later did I understand that the fireworks were to honor American independence — the 4th of July. I thought the fireworks were for me, a welcome to this new land of opportunity. My parents believed that we would have better educational options and could build a better future here. They sacrificed established careers, close-knit families and even their language for their children.
